Chapter 9

Two of a Kind

Paul Legerski climbed to the top of a tree, looking for hidden cameras. He was covered in the blood of what he assumed was a wild boar. The beast had been pig-like, covered in thick, wiry hair and sporting a pair of tusks. It had grunted like a pig when he surprised it, and when the blade of his machete cleaved through its head, the thing had squealed like a pig, as well. Still, though. He couldn’t be sure. It hadn’t tasted like pork, because he’d eaten it raw. It was possible that the boar was just another trick, perpetrated by whomever was filming all of this.

The blood on his hands, face, and forearms felt real enough. It had dried to a hard crust on his clothes. But still …

Legerski was convinced that he was the victim of some form of trickery. The only things to determine were who was behind it, and how he could escape. He’d checked the jungle for cameras or hidden microphones, but so far had found none. He’d wandered far in his search, and now had no idea how to find the rest of the people from the airport shuttle. Not that it mattered. They were probably in on it anyway—actors, paid to fuck with him. Maybe they’d left when he fell asleep. Maybe that was why he couldn’t find them. Whoever was behind this had probably removed the crashed bus and all the other pretend survivors while he slept. They could be out there right now, in some observation studio, having a good laugh while he stumbled around this place.

He was pretty sure he’d been drugged at some point. How else to explain the fact that he’d completely slept through the night? Yes, he had suffered a head injury. Yes, they had knocked him out for a while. But he’d been fine after that. So, he must have been drugged. He’d made his bed in a grove of tall, soft ferns. When he closed his eyes, the sun had been high in the sky. When he awoke again, it was in the same position, almost as if it hadn’t moved. That was impossible, of course. So were things like the razor grass and the dinosaur. The only thing that was real was that he woke refreshed. Therefore, he’d slept. But to sleep through the night like that? They must have dosed him on something.

Whoever they were.

No matter. He’d find out their identity in due time. And when he did, the bill would come due. He’d make them pay for fucking with him.

Clinging to the top of the tree, his feet spaced precariously on the branches below him, Legerski stared out at the landscape, looking for … well, he wasn’t sure. He’d climbed up here to search for cameras, but not finding any, he now looked for stage lights, or some kind of wall. If he was on a set somewhere, surely these things would be visible. Spying none, he shielded
